June 2024 World Cup Digest

This edition covers:

A Visual Representation of World Cup Ticket Prices since 1994

As a slight data and numbers nerd, I enjoyed myself a bit too much analyzing the content regarding the history of World Cup ticket pricing. Additionally, the casual sports fan is always surprised when I disclose how much I spent on tickets for each World Cup so this may open some eyes.

Some comments / notes on this research:

  • Tickets are priced by (i) Category and (ii) Match Round

  • Because of the pricing and inflation adjustment, this article displays four unique graphs per each Match Round to illustrate the change so make sure you swipe to see the info in a format that interests you.

  • Any tournament that listed ticket pricing only in its local currency was converted to USD based on the start date of the tournament.

  • 1998 and 2002 information was near impossible to find so please respond to this email if you have the chart from a reputable source!

One example that is fun to visit from the article is the Group Stage matches. Here’s the two visuals that are grouped by year. One is pricing at the time of the tournament + the other visual is the same but accounts for inflation:

Prices for Group Stages at time of World Cup

Prices for Group Stages, accounting for inflation to 2022 $$$

Lastly, there will be more analysis to come, including the suggested prices from the 2018 bid and how that looks compared to 2022, how 2022 men’s compares to 2023 women’s tournament, etc.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this as well as questions, etc. If you have anything you’d like to share, don’t hesitate to send a message.

FIFA Launches FIFA+ Collect w/ Prizes

I recently started receiving inquiries about the FIFA+ Collect digital marketplace. I believe it is because in the language, FIFA communicates this can be a way to earn match tickets for 2026.

First, this area isn’t exactly my expertise; however, I can point you in the right direction.

It seems like you can either complete a challenge or buy someone’s rewards from challenges on the marketplace. There is, in fact, one challenge that allows a user the right to purchase two tickets to 3 different Group Stage matches at 2026 or the Opening Match for USA in Los Angeles.

FIFA Selects Brazil for 2027 World Cup Host

Per last month’s newsletter, the presumed allocation of 2027 to a joint bid from USA & Mexico was put to a halt as the committee removed themselves from contention. These two will now put all their efforts into hosting the 2031 edition and are the heavy favorites to win.

This meant the 2027 hosting rights came down to head to head battle between Brazil and the joint bid of Germany / Belgium / Netherlands.

There are some theories about why Brazil was granted the tournament and it is somewhat humorous that those do mention a “higher score” on the bid evaluation (considering that hasn’t mattered at all in the past).

That said, I personally have no qualms with trying to spend my 2027 summer like I did for World Cup 2014. Who’s coming with me?

FIFA Sends Welcome Message for World Cup 2026 Tickets

As reported in the article about 2026 World Cup tickets, anyone can sign up for updates directly from FIFA regarding ticket information. That said, and the reason the site and newsletter exist, FIFA isn’t exactly the best at keeping fans informed.

Bizarrely, many people received a confirmation email for signing up for the FIFA 2026 notification months after initially signing up. This caused quite the stir in many fans thinking the tickets were officially on-sale. They are not.

  1. Footage of 1990 World Cup Tackles

Ok, this is a bit wild…check out this instagram reel that shares footage from the 1990 World Cup. It hurt watching some of those tackles…which were somehow only yellow cards!

  2. Aerial of 2026 Stadiums

This instagram reel shows an aerial of the 2026 host stadiums.

  3. Hospitality Packages

As a reminder, options may exist to pay for hospitality packages, if that’s your style for 2026. Check out the article that highlights hospitality options, how we may help, how to register interest with FIFA and even 2022 examples.
